Composting | Ep4: What to put in your compost heap or bin
Let's talk compost! Not many things in life are free, but compost is! Take all those grass clippings, vegetation and food peelings and turn it into scrumptious, nutritious goodness for your soil. All whilst providing a cosy home for lots of critters. WIN WIN WIN.
We spoke to Jenny from STAA in Nottingham, to pick her brains about compost. In the fourth episode of the series, we find out how to create your compost by using a mix of nitrogen and carbon rich materials.
Huge thanks to Jenny for sharing her wisdom and for Secret Garden Space and Pythian Club for hosting us. And thanks also to National Lottery players who made #GreenYourNeighbourhood possible.

About Green your Neighbourhood:
Green your Neighbourhood is being made possible thanks to a grant of £10,000 from The National Lottery Heritage Fund, with thanks to National Lottery Players. The Wildlife Garden Project has been working alongside Nottinghamshire Wildlife Trust to film community groups involved in Nextdoor Nature Nottingham, the Trust’s movement for nature. We will be launching a series of films and a national campaign to help people to create or enhance their local green space.

I've done this! I mostly love it, it's actually easier to garden this way. My German mother hates it because it's kind of messy, she prefers manicured with a lawn :D this year the rabbits got all of my pumpkins and squash, the deer tried to get my fruit trees, and the squirrels stripped my peach trees in 3 days.

I would strongly advice not ever to use cardboard in your garden. It contains chemicals that stay in your soil for a long time. I used to use card board in my compost piles before i'd done some research. I always thought, my compost worms love the cardboard, so it'll do no harm.....

Me. An American: Boy, it must be nice to be able to dig into a compost heap with no gloves without fear of being bitten or stung by a venomous creature. All British people: Yes, I suppose it is. Gardening can be lovely….when it isn’t raining… We can even walk through our ancient mossy rain forests with bare feet too. If you can find one that is… Me putting on sunscreen: Wow! That must feel amazing! Those forests are beautiful too! Like something straight out of a fairytale! I could definitely imagine spotting a unicorn in a forest like that! British: Yeah. They’re nearly gone now, but we’re trying to grow them back… At least there’s SOMETHING that thrives in all this rain… It’s tough, though, with all the rabbits and red deer eating new plant growth. Not to mention the damage done by sheep and other non-native animals… Me putting on my made in the USA alligator skin boots and Burmese python snake skin belt: Yeah. We’ve got our own trouble with invasive non-native species…We’re managing though. At least they make for good hunting! Don’t taste too bad either if you fix em’ up right. Gator can make for some damn good fried chicken in a pinch! British preparing tea: You…EAT them? Me loading my shotgun, compound hunting bow, 1 foot hunting knife, and ammunition into my Ford F-150: Yeah! Might as well! Their skins make mighty fine leather products too! Gotta make the best out of a bad situation, right? Especially if you can make money from it. British quietly sipping tea while eyeing the bill for their overpriced apartment: …Quite… Me leaning out of my truck window: Well, good luck with your newts and toads or whatever. And, hey. If you’re ever in the mood for some good ol’ huntin’, fishin’, and grillin’, you’re always welcome. You know where to find me. *tips cowboy hat and speeds off in American* YEEEEEE-HAAAAAW! British: …*sigh*…
